Low Voltage Landscape Lights

Low voltage landscape lights and lighting systems have low voltage light fixtures, low voltage cables, and plug-in transformers. The transformer included is plugged into a grounded power receptacle located outdoors, and this transformer is able to reduce the current standard 110 volts to a safe low voltage of 12. The cable is then attached to the transformer, distributing power to all the light fixtures that are connected along with the length of the cable.

The low voltage landscape lights are helpful in beautifying your landscape all day and night. They are commercially available in abundant styles, and consequently give emphasis to the key elements of every home and garden during the night time. Installing low voltage landscape light will make your walkways safer to pass on after the sun goes down. They are also easy and safe to install, such that even those who are technically challenged will be able to follow these simple instructions.

When installing low voltage landscape lights, no matter how safe you think they are, it is still good to remember that you are still working with electricity. Always make sure that the power is turned off when you are working with it. Also, refrain from touching the wires located near electrical panels. For improved insulation, make sure that your hands are dry and that you are wearing gloves while working. Before you start digging, consult your manufacturers to give you the safety guidelines that you need to follow. Also, check with your utility company for the location of the underground wires and pipes.

When installing the transformer, make sure that you place it near the ground fault circuit interrupter, or the GFCI outlet. This GFCI outlet is designed to protect the person from possible severe or fatal electric shocks. It can also prevent electrical fires as it detects the ground faults, by interrupting the electric current flow. The GFCI is able to monitor the flow of the electricity in a circuit. Moreover, it effectively and instantly switches off power to the circuit once it detects that there is no balance in the flow of the electricity. Always make sure that the transformer is installed one foot away from the GFCI circuit, and at least a foot above ground. If the placement of the transformer is away from the house, you can just mount the transformer into a post. Also, cover the transformer with weatherproof material to protect it from the sun and rain.

Upon arrangement of the low voltage landscape lights, lay them out in the ground along with the cable. Leave at least 8 to 10 inches of distance between each light fixture, while making sure that the first light is at least 10 feet away from the transformer. If you have a hard time laying the lights out, you can start with a rough sketch of the layout. This way, you will have an idea on where to place each light fixture. If there are one or more lights that aren’t working, check the connections and make sure that they pierce the cable.
